Officially today is the first day of summer, let's hope for some good weather days ahead! Kayak classes are underway from the beach here at Langley as we continue on our way north.
We drop into Oak Harbor for some pricey fuel, it is twice as much as what we purchased here last September. Ouch! We meet the crew of "Little Buddy", an R23 from Whidbey, while filling our tank. As always, lazy seals lounge on the logs along the entryway to the fuel dock.
The captain takes us through Deception Pass ahead of the slack, riding a 5 knot current with ease. We have made it to the San Juan Islands, hooray! It's time to cross the smooth water of Rosario Strait to Lopez.
And then we are happily anchored in Watmough Bay at the southern end of Lopez Island, a favorite spot of ours.
For the first evening of summer, we take turns with the dinghy to drift along the shore and over the kelp beds toward the outer islets of the bay. It's a lovely place to be! I even have a young seal following me and keeping me company.
Well, as they say in the Pacific Northwest, if you don't like the weather, just wait. Problem is that when we do like it, it still changes. And so our calm evening ends as the S.W. winds pick up to 15 knots, whistling as they blow over NORTH STAR and giving us lots of rocking in our anchorage. Next time we will anchor a lot closer inside the bay toward the beach!
