cruising: coupeville
Date: June 26, 2019
Time Start: 11:50 a.m.
Time Finish: 5:00 p.m.
Cruise From: Kingston
Cruise To: Coupeville, Whidbey Island
Engine Hours Start: 975
Engine Hours Finish: 980
Weather/sea conditions: Partly sunny, clouds building in evening, windy on water, 60's
All slips at Kingston are reserved for a flotilla of some 80 human powered boats arriving from Port Townsend today. Luckily, we have plans to continue cruising north. We wonder if we will have a maze of crab pots to weave through, as there are a few boats in the marina with pots ready to drop today. The dock herons are already on the job, looking for their daily catch of fish.

As we cross Admiralty Inlet toward Possession Point, four transcient Orca whales heading south pass near us, such a treat! No photos, just one of those moments to treasure. And then we are into white caps and salt water splashing up onto the windows of NORTH STAR. The clouds build around us through the afternoon as we cruise along Whidbey Island to Coupeville.
A spot just the right size for us to squeeze into is available on the dock at the Coupeville wharf. We're happy to see that the historic schooner "Suva" is still moored here, and she is ready to pull out with a crew of volunteers for an evening of sailing lessons.

Coupeville is an historic and photogenic town, and a wonderful place for walking. We are tempted to ring the whale bell, after all, we saw four whales today! Photos from our evening walk:
The clouds that have been building throughout the day provide the perfect sky for sunset. It is one to savor!

Coupeville layover day
Weather: Rain overnight, clearing to partly cloudy, windy, mid 60's
We are taking a day to enjoy Coupeville. Morning starts out wet after a night of rain. We treat ourselves to breakfast at the Knead and Feed, followed by visits to the local historical museum and the inviting shops in town.

The museum is filled with the stories of Coupeville's past and we highly recommend a visit.
The lobby of the old wharf building has displays relating to the marine environment.
While Dan tends to a work project, I have time to roam the residential streets, admiring the many well preserved historical homes. The lilac garden nursery is also a fun stop, with colorful glass art mixed in among the flowers.
Dan, being a shellfish researcher, is thrilled when a processing vessel from nearby Penn Cove mussel farms pulls into the wharf.
Late afternoon walks reveal more of this fun town. What a great stopover!
We're ready for dinner, and we know what we want and where to go. This morning we saw fresh halibut being prepared as we passed by the kitchen window of the local pub, Toby's. And it is a great meal!
