cruising: rebecca spit
Date: July 8, 2019
Time Start: Noon
Time Finish: 5 p.m.
Cruise From: Comox, Vancouver Island
Cruise To: Rebecca Spit, Quadra Island
Engine Hours Start: 1007
Engine Hours Finish: 1012
Weather/sea conditions: Beautiful, mid 70's, calm
Smooth cruising today! Blue skies, wispy clouds on the horizon, hints of the mountains on mainland B.C. and Vancouver Island, Mittlenatch Island Wildlife Refuge, smooth but rippled water - we're looking at a hint of the adventures that lie ahead of us. The shadows of the hills and mountains are beckoning to us! The cruise so far has been a gradual process of letting go of the familiar, and we are ready to submerge ourselves into the quieter and more natural world. It is time to breathe deeply and leave the cares of the world behind for awhile, a break time from cities and towns and our normal routines.

We round the point of Rebecca Spit off Quadra Island, dropping anchor in Drew Harbour in 25 feet of water, and what a beautiful spot. It's summer at Rebecca Spit, water is 72 degrees, just perfect for a swim, and dinner is in the cockpit.
After dinner, we head to shore for a walk along the trails and beaches of Rebecca Spit Marine Park. The views are pretty wonderful!
Now for a mystery! When we return to NORTH STAR, we find a gift of two fish heads sitting on our swim step. We wonder who brought us this generous gift!

Rebecca Spit layover day
Weather: Light clouds, S.E. winds, warm, low 70's, then gray in evening with wind and rain
We had a warm night, and today should be warm, too, with light clouds and a breeze from the S.E. We are anchored in what looks like a large round lake surrounded by beaches, forests, and on the far shore, scattered homes. The spit is a park, trails extend the length of it, with nice beaches along both inner and outer shores. Across Drew Harbour on Quadra Island is a resort (Heriot Bay Inn and marina and a store) as well as a ferry landing for the run to Cortes Island. We are headed to shore for some beautiful walking this morning.

Back on NORTH STAR, we have five eagles soaring over us! It's time for a swim, and then . . . mystery solved! Hearing a thump in the stern, Dan looks at the swim step, and there is the donor of our fish heads, ready to devour a starry flounder. The otter has already finished off one fish, evidenced by the presence of a new fish head. It isn't a bit bothered that we are there, all it wants is to enjoy its meal.
The rain begins, and we have wind and rain to end the day.

Rebecca Spit layover day
Weather: Stormy
It was blustery with downpours of rain overnight, and the skies are thick with gray clouds this morning. Wind continues to churn up the waters of Drew Harbour. The shores of Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park are uninviting and empty. It's a day to hunker down for cabin time. We have delayed our departure from here until tomorrow.
The rain and wind continue all day, giving us lots of time to read. Finally, the clouds thin enough to give us a break and a bit of shore time. Evening turns out to be beautiful.
