Date: September 15, 2019
Time Start: 1:30 p.m.

Cruise From: Gig Harbor
Cruise To: Dock Street Marina, Tacoma
Engine Hours Start: 1116
Engine Hours Finish: 1117
Weather/sea conditions: Rain, upper 50's, calm
It's one of those rainy days when it is nice to huddle inside the cabin of NORTH STAR and enjoy a full breakfast. Dan makes his trademark blueberry pancakes while we listen to music, read, and laze away the morning. The rain finally diminishes for our short cruise across Commencement Bay and into the Foss Waterway. We have space waiting for us at the Dock Street Marina, right in front of the Glass Museum. The Lady Washington is out for a sail on the bay, otherwise there is little boat traffic today.

It is too late in the day to visit the museum, but we have a nice walk, taking in the Bridge of Glass where works by native artist Dale Chihuly are displayed. The colors really pop in contrast to the gray day!
The evening lights up!
Date: September 16, 2019
Dock Street layover day
Weather: Sunshine in morning, partly cloudy, upper 60s, then thunderstorm and downpour in evening
It's Monday, and the museums are all closed today. We have the Glass Museum, Washington State History Museum, and Tacoma Art Museum all within walking distance. Instead, we stroll along the Foss Waterway and then up into downtown Tacoma, looping back through the campus of the University of Washington Tacoma branch to the marina. There is a building next to the campus that we haven't visited before. It houses fitness facilities shared by the University and the Y. What a fantastic place! We are envious of everything that is available to students, and are given a tour. From climbing walls to exercise equipment to classrooms to basketball courts - exercise needs are covered from A to Z here.

It is an information day for students on campus, and tables are set up outdoors for all of the various organizations associated with the University to share their program offerings. Looks like Dan would like to be a student, too!
Dan has a meeting this afternoon at the Center for Urban Waters. He has been a board member since its inception. He has opted to walk to the meeting, meaning a stroll along the Foss Waterway, then crossing the high bridge over the water and continuing out to the building that sits on the opposite shore. It is hard to miss for its red color when you cruise the waterway.
The day has been lovely, but suddenly clouds build, dark ones, and thunder rolls in, along with a major deluge. I worry a bit about the long return walk Dan will take, but he manages to get a lift from another board member. It is amazing how quickly weather can change!
