It's time for the saying "the frost is on the pumpkin"! Our first cold weather is here with our first frost predicted. We're having glorious fall days - cold, clear, leaves turning color and falling. Hillsides are bronze with Big Leaf Maples. A cruise to enjoy this special time is irresistible. We choose Jarrell Cove as our destination, knowing there is power on the dock. We want to be able to keep a heater running on the cold nights ahead! As we cruise we are treated to sailboats racing near Boston Harbor, their colorful spinnakers out and filled with the wind.

We aren't the only ones wanting to enjoy these days on the water. The dock at Jarrell Cove is full except for a small slot between a boat and dock pilings. We've done this before, we can do it again. Captain Dan expertly slides us in using the bow and stern thrusters. The space is snug, but we fit! It's time to get off the boat and enjoy the scenery in the park.
There are just enough clouds to catch the colors of the sunset. And, as we have come to expect at Jarrell Cove, cormorants fly in from every direction to roost for the night in the nearby trees. We never cease to be amazed and thrilled by this event.

Jarrell Cove layover day
Weather: Cold and clear with N.E. winds, sun, beautiful.
This day is made for being outdoors! We walk, we row, we watch birds (cormorants, herons, eagles, kingfishers, gulls, ducks . . .) we eat, lots of warm and comforting foods. It's one of those days to savor, starting with morning in the cove.

A hot breakfast gets us going, and then we are off to walk through the park, along the Harstine Island roads, and through the forested trails of the park. A local mailbox is decorated for the season, a reminder that it is not only fall but time to vote in the upcoming elections. And we see what we call Halloween caterpillars!
Late afternoon, with the sun at a low angle and lighting up the park shoreline, is the perfect time to explore the cove from the dinghy. A madrona tree hanging over the cove is loaded with red fruits.
The maple trees glow golden in the sun and reflect in the water.
Have you ever heard a seal sneeze? I did, while drifting in the cove, a seal on the shadowy side of the cove suddenly had a sneeze attack. And it sneezed just like we do, head tilted back and jerking forward with each sneeze, powerful and loud. Reminds me of someone I know! By the way, seals don't wear masks. Or sneeze into their elbows. Thankfully it was well distanced.

How can you not enjoy a day like this?
The day is perfect for another row in the dinghy and for walking in the park. We see schools of fish, possibly herring, in the water by the dock. Leaves float on the surface. And two eagles chase each other above us. Nature is alive and well in this little cove!
It's time to say goodbye to Jarrell Cove and head home, and we have another day of scenic cruising.
We have great memories of colorful fall days at Jarrell Cove!
