Engine Hours Finish: 1357
Weather/sea conditions: Fog in a.m., gray and calm, light north wind, upper 40's
The day is gray, the water flat calm, and we see no other boat traffic as we head north to the Narrows and continue into Gig Harbor. It is just the easiest cruise, and we find plenty of available space on the Jerisich Public Dock. We'll spend the night, happy there is power on the dock for running our portable heater, and happy to be in this walkable and scenic community once again.

Two things tell us that we are in Gig Harbor - lots of activity on the water. and lots of dog walkers on shore! Right away we see both. We are amazed to see young teens out paddling the knee kayaks. We learn that this is their first week on the water, the long paddling season is just starting for them. One paddler tells us this is his very first day in the kayak. Another paddler flips, and despite his dunking in the frigid water, continues to finish the practice session. They are learning to be tough and self reliant! We can see their legs shake as their muscles are being challenged, and an instructor gives directions on how to get more power behind their paddles. Already they are being timed as they have mini races along the dock - a baseline to compare to as they grow stronger through the season.
The town is festive in the early evening as we stroll along the main street. Strings of white lights outline the buildings along the way, and lights reflect on the water of the harbor. Dragon boats are out practicing in the dark, the paddlers wearing arm bands of either green or red lights to indicate starboard or port. We hear them glide by the dock, and then they unload at the end of our dock when practice is finished. We are glad we chose a spot at the end of the dock, we have great views of the harbor activities and the lights.

Gig Harbor morning
Morning is cool, in the mid 40's, breezy and gray. We start the day with coffee and pastries from Java and Clay, a combination coffee and pottery shop across the street from the dock. We have time for a waterfront walk to enjoy the historic homes and shops of the town, and to take in views of the harbor. We love seeing the commercial fishing boats that are still here, along with the marinas filled with pleasure boats.
