jarrell cove in january
Date: January 22, 2021
Time Start: 12:15 p.m.
Time Finish: 2:30 p.m.
Cruise From: Swantown Marina, Olympia
Cruise To: Jarrell Cove Marine Park, Harstine Island
Engine Hours Start: 1262
Engine Hours Finish: 1264
Weather/sea conditions: A sunny but chilly winter day, north winds, 50 degrees dropping to below freezing at night. Beautiful!
It's a pretty day, and this is our first cruise of 2021! It also happens to be the 21st birthday of our oldest grandson, and we are sending lots of love and good wishes his way today!
So much has happened in the world since our last cruise. The U.S. now has some 430,000 fatalities from the pandemic, and new and potentially more virulent variants of the virus are emerging. Fortunately, vaccine is becoming available. We are among the fortunate and have received our first dose. For now, two doses are needed for the greatest protection, and we have an appointment for that dose as well. Getting vaccine into the arms of the general population will take time, we are far from seeing the end of this global pandemic. And, there has been great turmoil on the political front in our country. Our new president, Joe Biden, has been sworn in along with Kamala Harris as vice president. History in the making, she is the first woman to hold her position, and the first with a mixed ethnic background. Sadly, insurrection in the form of a massive crowd storming the U.S. Capitol that resulted in injuries, deaths, vandalism and destruction, occurred ahead of the inauguration. For his role in this event, now ex President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives and now faces an impeachment trial in the Senate. Unsettling times, beyond our wildest imaginings!
Troubles stay behind as we enter through the gate of our marina, walk down the ramp to our boat, pull away from the finger pier, and are finally under way, heaving big sighs of relief to have this time on the water, distancing, ready to be soothed by the wonders of boating.
For a day in January, today is about perfect! (We've had plenty of rainy days this January!) The cruise has a wintry look, with north winds adding some chop to the water, and surrounding mountains wearing coats of fresh snow. Invigorating, but beautiful!

Jarrrell Cove is a favorite gunkhole for us, just the right distance from home, and we once again find ourselves a spot on the long inner dock. It's time to enjoy our destination. We're feeding our souls today!
The Cove glows with the gold of the sun as it sets. There is little fanfare today, just darkening clear skies. And, the cormorants arrive, just as always, but not until the skies are too dark for photos. We retreat to the cozy warmth of NORTH STAR as the temperature plummets. It is 28 degrees outside when we retire, piling on some extra blankets and leaving the heater running for the night.

Ahhh, sunshine. A few scattered mergansers swim on the quiet water, and Dan gets a chilly row. Sailboats begin to arrive, and we learn from two of the boaters that South Sound Sailing is having a gathering here today.
Clouds begin to build as we make our way south to Swantown. The mountains we enjoyed yesterday are obscured, with the exception of Mt. Rainier. The clouds stretch high above it, like a curtain waiting to drop.
We're ready for more winter cruises, they do soothe and feed the soul!
