Memorial Day weekend has arrived, bringing spectacular weather to our part of the world. Yesterday we completed several boat maintenance chores, including cleaning away the accumulated grime on the exterior of NORTH STAR, and removing the winter protective cover over the cockpit and replacing it with the overhead canopy.
Today, we are off for a picnic cruise, joining so many other boaters out to enjoy the holiday. We are enjoying a real taste of summer with bright sunshine, blue skies, and hot days. It feels festive! With the tide low, a breeze from the north, and the mountains clear, it is another spectacular day to be on the water.

All kinds of pleasure boats are out today. As always, the sailboats look so stunning with their sails unfurled against the sky. And, we are delighted to see a schooner from Seattle, Pteradactyl, out on the water. We had seen her moored along Percival Landing earlier in the weekend. About those mountains in the background . . . we think we could be in Alaska looking at them!
The anchor is dropped off of Squaxin Island near the former state park site. The air is filled with the sounds of water toys - jet skis, power boats, you name it, everyone wants to be on the water having fun today. What a contrast to all of the serene times when we have had the water all to ourselves. It's definitely a holiday for all of us sun starved people in the Pacific Northwest!
By the time we head for home, the skies are hazy and the wind is creating a chop on the water. Tomorrow will be much cooler, and NORTH STAR will be spending the holiday in her berth for some routine engine maintenance.
