squaxin island
Date: August 12, 2016
Time Start: Noon
Time Finish: 1:20 p.m.
Cruise From: Swantown
Cruise To: Squaxin Island
Engine Hours Start: 549
Engine Hours Finish: 550
Weather/sea conditions: Sunny and hot! 90 degrees with a breeze.
Just one week after completing our long cruise to the Broughtons and back, we are headed out for a quick overnight. Hot summer days are here, and the Perseid meteorite showers are at their best. We are hoping to get a glimpse of them by getting away from the glare of city lights. Swimming is on our agenda, too, if we find some inviting water. Here in our marina, the water is a sludgy deep brown, the result of prolific algae blooms.
How simple it is to provision for just one night! It is as beautiful as ever pulling out of the marina into Budd Bay, the cutout silhouettes of the Olympics on the far horizon, a few sailboats with their white sails standing out against the blue of the water. Thick patches of moon jellies are scattered throughout the bay, large clouds just below the surface of the water.

We drop anchor in our favorite spot of off Squaxin Island. The water is clear enough to entice swims, and we spend a leisurely afternoon and evening relaxing and enjoying being back on NORTH STAR and back on the water. Dan works with his ROV, trying to coordinate his computer commands with the movements of the ROV.
We have jellyfish here, too. Along the shore of Squaxin, fallen trees are now covered with barnacles. They catch my eye, almost looking like the branches have been flocked with snow.
The sky lights up with beautiful reds glowing on the wispy clouds and reflecting on the water.
We look for the meteorites in the starry skies, but there is too much ambient light from the city of Tacoma. Still, we enjoy gazing at the many stars and planets above us on a warm summer night.

Breakfast is light on this already warm day. The water is flat calm. Schools of herring are jumping in the water, while a heron fishes along the shore. Unfortunately, we need to head for home as we have other obligations today. It is an early goodbye to this lovely spot.

Near Boston Harbor, we see a Ranger Tug headed toward us. We toot and wave, it is "Lobo", an R225 from Canada. So great to see tugs coming to our waters for a visit! We aren't seeing many other boats out this morning, but it is sure to be different this afternoon as the heat of the day increases.
Back at Swantown, we see another Ranger Tug on the visitors dock. NORTH STAR gets a rinse, and then we meet some new Ranger Tug owners, "M" and Ken on a new R29CCB called "Rainy Day" and moored on the dock next to ours. These boats are getting to be popular!
