We're in a big bowl of perfectly flat and calm water inside a circle of shorelines on this hazy summer morning. It's more like being on a lake than being right next to the Strait of Georgia here in Winter Cove.
We cruise out of Winter Cove and head to the pass between Samuel and Mayne Islands, a much safer passage into the Strait than taking Boat Pass. And it is so scenic today with glassy seas, low rock ledges, islets.
The captain navigates our way into the Strait of Georgia where we turn south to Cabbage Island, passing low rocky islets that rise out of the shallow waters and provide habitat for birds and marine mammals, especially seals.
There is one empty buoy available in the anchorage between Cabbage and Tumbo Islands, and we make it ours. We have no complaints about this lovely setting!
There is a breeze rippling the water when we head to the beach of Cabbage while the tide is low. We pay our buoy fee at the kiosk in the camp area before exploring the beaches. At low tide, long arms of the island get exposed, reaching far out across the water. Fucus seems to be the main algae on the shore, and purple varnish clams are abundant. These beaches are on the north side of Cabbage:
A nice sandy beach faces the moored boats, a great place for kids to play and to just perch on a log and take in the scenery.
On the southward facing beaches, arms reaching toward Tumbo are exposed by the tide. Each side of Cabbage Island has a unique shore!
The water remains amazingly calm through the afternoon and into evening, with only an occasional ripple or wake from a passing boat. It's a still, quiet world, with muted voices and bird calls - an eagle! - and young seal pups callng to their moms out on the reef. The Strait of Georgia is a tame place today.
The evening glow of sunlight lights up the shoreline, a nice time to go for a row along the edge of Tumbo Island.
And then we find our spots to witness the grand finale of the day, a spectacular sunset. Is there a green flash? I think so!
The final reds, and geese are swimming and seals are slapping. The tide is high.
