We make the short cruise to Deer Harbor after a final lunch on the dock of Jones Island. The afternoon is windy and cool, and we spend our time inside the cabin of NORTH STAR.
Date: June 29, 2022
Deer Harbor layover day
Weather: Gray, cool, breezy, with a light drizzle in a.m., clearing to low 60's and sunshine
It's laundry day! Top priority! A big pile has accumulated underneath the table of the cabin in NORTH STAR. We get it done, everything is stowed back in proper places and fresh bedding and towels are ready for use. Now we can explore Deer Harbor. This is our first visit to this rural feeling harbor that pretty much focuses on boats and water related activities.

The "deer" of Deer Harbor:
It's mostly the unusual and unique boats that catch our eye as we walk the marina docks. We love a Victory tug, the Contessa, as well as an old sailboat and other non-traditional boats.
The seaplane dock is a busy place. It seems like a plane arrives as soon as one takes off.
And the marina is a hub for water related activities. If you want to kayak, go on a whale or wildlife cruise, fish, you name it, this is the place to come.
It is a short walk along the road and on trails to a wildlife preserve that adjoins the marina property.
We get some fun neighbors in the marina. Pat and Dan from Everett tie up next to us. They are on their way to Stuart Island where they will be docents in the lighthouse for ten days. What fun! They are all prepped with interesting facts and history about the lighthouse. Hopefully we will get to visit them there!
And then we meet Barbara from Orcas along with her friend who is visiting from Arizona. Barbara is owner of the brand new deep red R 31 "Whoa Nelly" that is moored here on the marina dock. Welcome aboard, Barbara! We hope to cross wakes with you again!
Dinner is out tonight, all we have to do is cross the street to Island Pie for pizza on the sunny deck with views of the harbor. The day has warmed into the perfect evening to dine outdoors. After salad and pizza, we splurge on fresh strawberry shortcake. Six college students are the servers, working to earn money for their educations. They come from as far away as the Dominican Republic, and also from California and Oregon. Hopefully they will get lots of big tips!
