gig harbor and jarrell cove
Date: September 21, 2010
Time Start: 11:30 a.m.
Time Finish: 4 p.m.
Cruise From: Pousbo
Cruise To: Gig Harbor
Engine Hours Start: 1124
Engine Hours Finish: 1129
Weather/sea conditions: Fog early, cloudy, low 60's, calm
It's hard to leave this morning as we spend time connecting and chatting with our fellow boaters. Most of them are staying one more night. I am thrilled to meet up with my friend Mary. I usually see her at the annual Rendezvous, but we missed going this year. And here she is! It is so great to connect and visit and to learn that she and her husband Mike are now on a brand new R 29! They have moved up from an R 25. Their previous boat was "Dauntless". It will be fun to hear what they name their new tug.
We take a final walk to town for fresh milk and more glimpses of the Nordic influence in Poulsbo, and then we are ready to head south.

We cruise into Liberty Bay, then along Bainbridge Island and into Rich Passage. The morning fog has dissipated, and the water is smooth. Memories resurface in Rich Passage as ferries (one a car ferry, the other a passenger ferry) pass by. We were part of a project several years ago that ended in termination of use of a fast passenger ferry on this run that created a wake that was causing shorelines to rapidly erode. That wake acted almost like a tsunami when it hit the shore. The wakes from these ferries today are far more mellow.
We cruise past Blake Island and through Colvos Passage before making our way into Gig Harbor once more. We were here just a week ago! This time, we can't tie up to the Jerisich public dock as it is closed for a SUP event. Instead, we make our way to the head of the harbor and drop our anchor. This time we will be viewing Gig Harbor from the water.
The dinghy is handy for getting close views of some of the docked fishing vessels.
Night views are pretty wonderful. We get the full effect of lights reflecting in the calm harbor.

The campgrounds ashore are empty on this wet Sunday. Even the deer are staying away in spite of all of the apples on the trees and on the ground in the orchard.
A new boat arrives, a gray Ranger Tug 31 sedan, and it looks so familiar. It is Willie's Tug! Now called Sea Ranger by its new owner, Ron, it is kept at Zittle's Marina in South Sound. We will be seeing lots of her on the water here! We enjoy meeting Ron, he and his wife love the boat. Herb and Willie would be pleased to know what great new owners she has!
And then it happens once again, the arrival of the cormorants! We never tire of this spectacle at Jarrell Cove as these amazing birds fly in, one by one, to roost in the trees across from the dock for the night. We have no idea how many there are, but there are a lot of them! When they arrive, we know that the sun will soon drop over the horizon.
The the cove lights up with the final rays of the sun. The day ends with clear blue skies - and cormorants!

A bit of sunshine gets us going this morning, as do free hot showers ashore. A few cormorants are still hanging around in the trees, as reluctant as we are to be off to an early start of the day. As always, Jarrell Cove is a wonderful place to laze away the hours in beautiful surroundings.

We have more chats with Ron on Sea Ranger. He is a wealth of information from years of traveling and cruising. Then, as rain has begun to fall, it is time to head south to home, along Harstine Island to Squaxin Island, then Hope Island and Budd Bay. Rain is still falling as we ease NORTH STAR into her slip at Swantown Marina. In no hurry to unload, we fix one final dinner aboard and spend a night sleeping in the marina. It 's a pretty nice ending to our cruise.
