It's an Olympics kind of day - the mountains are out! Hooray! We are in for a beautiful cruise to end the wintry month of January. A slight breeze ripples the water, and we are one of the only boats out enjoying the day. And we are the lone boat in Jarrell Cove when we arrive.

It's super calm in the cove today, but chilly on the water. Dan goes for a row the dinghy. It is no match in charm for a rowing shell with its bright colors that glides so easily through the cove. Ashore, all of the campsites are empty. Except for a few visitors who come by car for a quick stop, we have this park to ourselves!
We are so happy to see the cormorants return as the sun drops. This spectacle of their arrival to spend the night in the nearby trees never gets old. They settle in quickly, and so do we, snug in the cabin of NORTH STAR with our heater running continually through the cold night. Temperatures drop into the 20's.

Time Start: 2 p.m.
Time Finish: 4:45 p.m.
Cruise From: Jarrell Cove
Cruise To: Swantown Marina
Engine Hours Start: 1351
Engine Hours Finish: 1354
Weather/sea conditions: Cool, clear, calm, sun in a.m., clouds building in p.m.
Frost covers the boat and dock in the morning. It takes awhile for the sun to rise over the tree tops and melt it away. We enjoy Sunday breakfast aboard before taking a shore walk. With trees still bare, the sun shines into the forest, where we note that the understory of evergreen huckleberry bushes are affected by a fungus. We have never seen this before, or at least not noticed it. The tips of the stems and even whole branches have been affected. We take a lot of photos, hoping we can learn more about this. It seems to be an extensive infestation in the park, and we hope it isn't serious.

It's an easy cruise back to Olympia. Light clouds are forming in the sky, but Mt. Rainier is still a beautiful beacon. We are looking forward to more of these winter days on the water!
